DIY: simple beach skirt.

Image
Summer's warm weather is fast approaching, so it is time to start shopping for lighter clothing.   If you know how to stitch a straight line, you can also try making this cool and colourful beach skirt.  It will be a convenient item that you can tie over your swimsuit. Here are the items that you will need:             Sewing machine 2 - 3 yards of lightweight fabric  (I used fabric that is generally used for curtains and tablecloths in my country) thread pins tailor's chalk 1 inch width ribbon (optional) pair of scissors measuring tape pencil and paper to mark measurements I used a mannequin (this is also optional) So let's begin. - Measure your waist and divide this number by two.  - Measure from your belly button to your knee.  This will be the length of the front of your beach skirt....

February bargain makeup products!

Image
It's funny how a leisurely stroll at the mall could suddenly turn into a mini shopping expedition.   That is exactly what happened to me when I visited my favourite shopping mall this week - my curious gaze was thrown onto a few 'treasures' that I couldn't bear to leave behind.   I excitedly bought two Jordana baked eye shadows:  Green Mist and Purple Perfection.  I got the green one because I would like to do a St. Patrick's Day makeup tutorial in the near future.                                    The two eye shadows a...

MAC attack?!

Image
My first MAC cosmetics experience.                                      One day last week, I finally decided to buy my first MAC product.  I heard about the brand multiple times, however its 'interesting' price and intimidating stores both helped to keep me safely in my NYX/Revlon zone.     I breezed into one of their stores and was most relieved to see an old classmate working there.  She answered my questions and I was then allowed to examine the products.   After much deliberation, I decided on MAC's Violetta Amplified CrΓ¨me lipstick.  I chose that colour becau...

I made Bbq Bacon Sushi...well, sort of.

I made Bbq Bacon Sushi...well, sort of. I spied this recipe on a friend's fb page.  The video was found on COOK WITH MEAT'S You Tube account.  My ingredients:  turkey bacon, tuna, seasoning, ketchup, a sushi mat, cheese. 1.  Lay the bacon strips parallel to each other on the sushi mat.   2.  Spread the seasoned tuna on the bacon.     3.  Add cheese on tuna.        4.  Roll everything up carefully with the use of the sushi mat.   5.  Place roll to bake for 20 minutes at 365 degrees Farenheit.  Baste roll with ketchup or bbq sauce.  Place in oven for 5 more minutes.     6.  Remove roll and allow to cool.  Cut each piece carefully to about an inch width.     7.  Serve.  Gobble.  Repeat.      This was a heavenly dish.  The bacon flavor seeps into all the other ingredients allow...

Egyptian stencilled painting

Image
I did a research project about Egyptian tomb paintings.  The assignment included making a stencil print of one of the paintings. I chose to do this painting: This is not my photograph   I started by making lots of stencils to print the men, the moon etc. Masking tape was used to retain the brown cotton's original colour in some areas. I used dye extracted brown cotton and added blue fabric paint to represent the night sky: I put a couple of Egyptian symbols on both sides of the painting. I started to put the seated men, using the different stencils. I peeled off the masking tape to reveal the original fabric colour in some areas. The finished piece:

Sewing curtains I decided to make some living room curtains for Christmas 2013 using brown cotton and printed polyester cotton material. I tie - dyed the brown cotton and got an unexpected colour, so I just went out afterwards and bought the printed polyester cotton to match the tie - dyed brown cotton. In the photo below, the tie - dyed fabric is above while the printed polyester cotton is below. Then I measured the two different types of fabric to get similar widths.  They were pinned together before sewing. The pieces were sewn together. I I hemmed around the edges of each curtain and sewed the folds on top so the curtain rod can fit through.  The finished product is seen below:
